Raised by a single mother in poverty, he grew up with a mean temper that was quelled by Bible study. He later joined the junior ROTC where he became a regional leader, but opted to go to Yale University over West Point. He then went on to become a doctor and then an accomplished neurosurgeon with a focus on pediatrics
